Madekwe was born South London, England into an ethnically diverse family. Her father is a Nigerian-Swiss, while her mother was English. She was raised in the southern part of London Council Estate, and then attended The Brit School aged 14. She graduated with a BA in acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. She appeared on stage in several productions as a student like King Henry V, as Princess Katherine as well as Wuthering Heights, as Catherine Earnshaw.

Madekwe made her US debut in the 2009 Drama series The Beautiful Life, which just aired two episodes in the US on The CW before being cancelled. Ashley Davenport appeared in ABC drama Revenge in February of 2011. Madekwe's departure from the series was announced in May 2013. After a period of two years as a main character, she appeared as a guest in the very first episode of season 3. In the TV series Salem, she played Tituba from 2014 until the year 2016. Madekwe married her actor partner Iddo goldberg on June 2012. They have worked together on Secret Diary of a Call Girl in the past, and Goldberg was also on the show with Madekwe on the TV show Salem.

Ashley Leggat is a Gemini-nominated actress, who was born into the large family. She was the daughter of Patty and Roy Leggat. Her parents Roy and Patty, as well as her brothers Brett, Todd, and Bram, were all present.
